Militant Vegan Lashes Out At Tofu Eating Teen For Cultural Appropriation of Tofu
Some vegans just want to see the world burn.
Tofu can spark surprisingly strong opinions, and one teenager found that out after sharing a simple recipe online. What started as a casual post about food quickly turned into a clash over identity, culture, and who gets to claim a plant-based staple.
Anna Del Ray never claimed to be vegan, and she was open about eating animal products like beef. Still, her tofu post drew backlash from a militant vegan who seemed to think the food belonged to a much narrower crowd. The reaction left Anna dealing with more drama than she ever expected.
Now the whole thing has turned into a bigger argument than anyone probably intended.
Tofurky is the go-to substitute for vegans and vegetarians on occasions like Thanksgiving or Christmas, so when Anna Del Ray found a great recipe, she decided to share it in a group on Facebook.
Daily BeastShortly afterward, a friend sent her a private message, excited to see her friend as a tofu enthusiast. Assuming Anna was a vegan, she began to inquire about her vegan history.
However, Anna was not a vegan, and the conversation quickly turned from pleasant to tumultuous.
Anna Del ReyUndisturbed and unshaken by the bizarre response from her Facebook friend, Anna tried to steer the conversation in a positive direction, but the militant vegan was not backing down.
In fact, they took it a step further and asserted that tofu is a food that belongs exclusively to vegans and vegetarians, claiming that what Anna was doing by eating it was cultural appropriation.

To be clear, cultural appropriation is defined as "the act of taking or using things from a culture that is not your own, especially without showing that you understand or respect this culture."
Whether or not veganism is a culture is not necessarily up for debate; it can certainly be a culture. However, the concept that tofu belongs to vegans, when compared to, say, how Indigenous people may feel about seeing Susan Smith in a headdress, is just ludicrous.

It’s a lot like the AITA fight where a vegan host insisted her family attend, despite their preferences.
Naturally, Anna decided to share the exchange by posting some screenshots on Facebook with the caption:
Apparently, veganism is a culture, and I’m appropriating it by eating tofu. I’m proud of this girl for standing up for what’s really important. This moved me. It changed me. Iconic.

When the post quickly went viral and was shared on websites like Imgur and Reddit, pretty much everyone with two or more brain cells to rub together was baffled by the audacity and ridiculousness of the militant vegan.

Some people were outraged by the entire concept that anything from food to hair or dancing could be considered appropriation, but this tofu incident really took the cake.

Did you know? If you are a vegetarian or vegan, you should be asking your meat-eating friends if they understand the consequences of eating tofu without acknowledging the pain, struggles, and suffering that vegans went through in order to have tofu today.

Some people were also not surprised that Anna encountered this personality, as they had also experienced harassment for not being vegan or vegetarian while enjoying meat-free staples.

Whether or not Anna will continue to enjoy tofu, no one can say.
But for one Reddit user, a very valid point was made about the militant vegan:

For another Thanksgiving blowup, see why this vegan daughter swapped turkey, then got called the AITA villain.
