Have you ever heard a man interrupt a discussion about women's rights with, 'But what about men?' Chances are, the answer is yes, especially around International Women's Day!

International Women's Day often brings out that side in men—the side that prompts them to ask, "Well, when is International Men's Day?" (P.S. the answer is Friday, 19 November 2021). According to Dr. Alexandra Solomon, a relationship therapist, "This response often reflects discomfort with the conversation about women's rights, rather than a genuine concern for men's rights." It becomes clear, very quickly, that the question and conversation actually have nothing to do with men's rights; it's really just a question they ask because they're either uncomfortable with or wish to minimize any discussion about the rights and plight of women.

There are likely many reasons for this, but ultimately, it's self-protective in many cases and likely serves as a way for men to divert the conversation away from a topic that makes them uncomfortable. That said, it doesn't mean it's okay—the discussion about women's rights needs to continue if we ever hope to implement change.
