VisionQuest Reveals Todd Stashwick’s Paladin, With a New Twist on the Marvel Villain

Episode 2 of VisionQuest identifies Todd Stashwick’s attacker as Paladin and reworks the Marvel mercenary for Disney+.

Marvel fans finally have a name for the armed threat that shatters Vision’s uneasy new reality in the opening stretch of VisionQuest. Episode 2 confirms Todd Stashwick is playing Paladin, but the Disney+ series is not using the comics version exactly as longtime readers know him.

The big change arrives in Episode 2, "Theseus," which pulls back the curtain on the mercenary pursuing Paul Bettany’s Vision. After the premiere keeps much of the action locked to Vision’s perspective, including time inside his self-created digital refuge and his awkward interactions with Fiona Guthrie, played by Polly Frame, the series makes clear that the man sending armed attackers after him is Paladin.

In VisionQuest, Paladin is presented as a ruthless hired gun brought in by a still-mysterious Client whose voice is disguised. His assignment is to recover Vision, specifically the White Vision seen in WandaVision, without killing him. Vision and the AIs around him understand that much, along with Paladin’s reputation for brutality, the idea that his contract carries the weight of a blood oath, and the fact that he belongs to an order of mercenaries who have passed down the Paladin identity over the years.

That last detail is where the series makes its sharpest departure from Marvel Comics. On the page, Paladin is an established but relatively minor figure whose real name is Paul Denning. He first appeared as part of Daredevil’s rogues gallery, then evolved into more of an antihero, working with heroes such as Matt Murdock and Spider-Man nearly as often as he opposed them. The comics version is known as a lethal marksman, a flirt, and a man with a moral code, while his background remains intentionally unclear.

VisionQuest keeps some of that mystery intact, since the show still has not explained who this Paladin really is or what drives him. But it also recasts the name itself as something larger than one man: a mantle tied to a criminal underworld organization with an elite reputation. For Marvel fans, that means the reveal is not just a casting answer for Stashwick’s role, but an early sign that the show is building its own version of a deep-cut character.

New episodes of VisionQuest stream on Disney+ every Tuesday.
