Bringing Emotional Support Cat to Work: AITA for Violating No-Pet Policy?
AITA for bringing my emotional support cat to work despite a no-pet policy, leading to tensions and potential disciplinary action?
A 28-year-old woman brought her emotional support cat to a high-stress workplace, and it did not stay cute and quiet for long. OP, dealing with anxiety, decided Luna the tabby would be her secret little comfort during the workday.
The plan was simple, at least on paper. Luna rides in a discreet pet carrier, stays hidden in OP’s office, and most colleagues supposedly never even notice. That is, until a crucial meeting yesterday, when Luna started meowing at the worst possible time.
Now HR is investigating, and OP is staring down possible discipline after a coworker with severe allergies reported the whole situation.

I (28F) work in a high-stress environment. Recently, I've been struggling with anxiety, so my therapist suggested I get an emotional support animal.
Meet Luna, my adorable tabby cat who has been a huge comfort to me. Now, my workplace has a strict no-pet policy, but my mental health comes first.
I decided to bring Luna in a discreet pet carrier to help me through tough days at work. She stays hidden in my office, and most colleagues don't even know she's there.
However, yesterday, during a crucial meeting, Luna started meowing unexpectedly. My coworker, who suffers from severe allergies, figured out I had a cat.
They reported me to HR for violating company rules and triggering their allergies. This led to a whole investigation.
Now, tension is high, and they're discussing disciplinary action against me. I never meant for any harm; I just needed Luna's support.

It’s also like the coworker with a noisy pet turtle, where everyone demanded she keep it at home.

OP thought Luna could stay tucked away in the office, but the no-pet policy did not care about “discreet.”
Then Luna meowed during that crucial meeting, and the coworker with severe allergies instantly clocked what was happening.
Once the report hit HR, OP’s “no one knows” setup turned into a full investigation with tension building fast.
Now everyone is circling the same question, whether Luna’s comfort mattered more than the rules and the coworker’s allergies.

Luna might be OP’s comfort, but HR is treating this like a workplace incident, not a purr-sonal exception.
