Debating if Im wrong for prioritizing my cats vet bill over repaying a friend
AITA for prioritizing my cat's vet bill over repaying my friend? Financial struggles complicate my promise to refund him.
A 28-year-old woman refused to let her cat’s health wait, even if it meant her bank account was about to take a hit. Mittens, her constant companion, got very sick about a month ago, and the vet bill ended up being “quite high.” She paid it all, no hesitation, because that’s her person, her fur baby, her whole world.
Then her friend Greg stepped in. He offered to lend her the money to cover the bill without her even asking, and she took it gratefully. Now Mittens is fully recovered, but Greg keeps pushing for repayment, dropping hints that he needs the money for his own expenses, while she’s stuck with reduced hours and a real struggle to make ends meet.
So the question isn’t just about cash, it’s about whether Greg’s patience is wearing thinner than Mittens’ bandage.

So I'm a 28-year-old woman with a cat, Mittens. Mittens means the world to me – she's my fur baby, my constant companion.
About a month ago, Mittens got very sick. I rushed her to the vet, and after some tests and treatments, the final bill was quite high.
I paid it in full because I would do anything for Mittens. Enter my friend, Greg.
Greg, who's 30, has always been aware of how much Mittens means to me. When he heard about Mittens' vet bill, he offered to lend me the money without me even asking.
Gratefully, I accepted his offer. Fast forward to now, after Mittens has fully recovered.
Greg has been asking me for the money back. Here's the catch – I've hit a rough patch financially.
My job cut back on hours due to the pandemic, and I'm struggling to make ends meet. Every time Greg brings up the money, I tell him I don't have it at the moment but will pay him back when I can.
Greg seems to be getting increasingly impatient and even dropped hints about how he needs the money for his own expenses. I'm torn because I value our friendship, but Mittens' well-being comes first.
Am I the a*****e for prioritizing my cat's needs over paying Greg back right away?

It’s like the AITA poster who confronted their mom over the lease debt they never knew about.

Greg was ready to help the moment Mittens got sick, but now that Mittens is fine, he’s acting like the loan is overdue.
OP keeps saying she’ll pay Greg back when she can, but the “when” keeps getting smaller every time Greg brings it up.
The awkward part is that OP didn’t borrow for a vacation or shopping spree, she borrowed to save Mittens’ life.
Now Greg’s hints about needing the money collide head-on with OP’s cut-back hours, and the friendship is starting to crack.

Greg might have meant well, but he’s testing whether friendship beats a cat’s emergency.
Before you judge Greg for his offer, read if it’s wrong to gamble while in debt.
