40 Redditors Reveal Their Confidential Family Secrets

Sometimes the safest and easiest place to spill the family tea is under the anonymity of Reddit.

Family secrets can sit quietly for years, then explode all at once when someone finally speaks up. In this Reddit thread, one user asked people to share the hidden truths their families kept buried, and the replies range from awkward to heartbreaking.

Some of these stories involve missing relatives, paternity surprises, long-held grudges, and choices that changed entire family trees. What makes them hit harder is how often the truth stayed hidden until it was almost impossible to fix anything.

#11 Never should've believed it.

This is kind of messed up, but my parents told me my mom had a bad back because I pushed on her spine during birth. This is what I believed throughout my childhood. I think I was in my teens when my older brother told me that my dad pushed my mom during an argument, causing her to fall and requiring surgery.

I thought I ruined my mom's back my entire childhood, and those SOBs let me believe it. :(

Secrets are sometimes harmful because people bury problems instead of finding solutions and repairing relationships. They are like termites that feed on a family's foundation, ultimately causing destruction.
