Neighbor Demands Payment for Dog Bite Incident: AITA for Refusing to Compensate?

Dog owner debates responsibility for neighbor's visitor bitten by territorial rescue dog in a moral dilemma - AITA for refusing to pay medical bills?

Rocco sounds like the kind of rescue dog who wins you over in five seconds, right up until he doesn’t. One minute he is “friendly,” the next he is territorial with strangers, and the whole block has to deal with the fallout.

In this Reddit post, OP (30M) warned Bob and Karen before their small gathering, kept Rocco leashed, and still somehow the dog slipped out and bit one of their visitors. The injury was minor, but the neighbors are now demanding OP pay the medical bills, plus they’re threatening to report Rocco to animal control if he refuses.

Now OP is stuck between feeling awful and believing Bob and Karen should have taken the warning seriously.

Original Post

I (30M) have a friendly but sometimes aggressive rescue dog named Rocco. He has a history of being territorial, especially around strangers.

For background, Rocco was mistreated in his previous home, so trust doesn't come easy to him. I've been working with a professional trainer to address his behavior, but progress has been slow.

Recently, my neighbors (Bob and Karen) had guests over for a small gathering. Despite warning them beforehand about Rocco's issues and keeping him leashed, he managed to sneak out and bit one of their visitors.

It was a minor bite with no serious injury, but understandably, they were upset. Now, Bob and Karen are demanding that I pay for the medical bills related to the bite, arguing that it was my responsibility to ensure Rocco wouldn't harm anyone.

They're also threatening to report Rocco to animal control if I don't comply with their demands. While I feel terrible about what happened, I've already invested a lot of time, money, and effort into trying to rehabilitate Rocco.

I believe that Bob and Karen should have been more cautious around him, knowing his history. So, AITA for refusing to pay for the medical bills and standing my ground on this issue?

This is similar to the AITA where a girlfriend wanted to use gifted fun money for debt and expenses, not shared plans.

Bob and Karen heard about Rocco’s history, but their guests still showed up like the bite was a surprise feature.

The minute Rocco “sneaked out” and went after a visitor, the vibe shifted from casual gathering to blame game.

OP’s claim that the dog was leashed and they warned everyone hits a wall when Bob starts talking medical bills and animal control.

With Rocco’s past mistreatment and OP’s slow progress in the background, the real fight becomes who pays for that one bad moment.

He might end up paying for the bite, but it’s Bob and Karen who are acting like they didn’t hear the warning.
