$60 Water Heater Fix Turns Into A Neighbor Feud After A Woman Accuses A Busy Dad Of Scamming Her
She wanted neighbor help on demand, then called him a bad parent.
The OP explained that he works six days a week as a welder and handyman, and he’s running on fumes at home.
He and his wife have three very young kids, including a newborn, and he says their life feels like nonstop work and survival mode.
For years, their neighbor, a single woman in her late 40s, treated OP like her go-to fixer. It started back when she lived next door. She got close with the family, asked for help around the house, and OP says he didn’t mind pitching in.
But time passed, and the dynamic didn’t change. The neighbor moved about 20 miles away, rented out the property, and still called OP for everything from Hanging TVs to installing a fan to fixing leaks.
These small jobs added up to gradually make him feel like he was being used, especially since he charges others for the same services.
On one particular day, she asked him to fix her water heater. But this time, he decided he was done doing things for free. So, he charged her $60 to replace the thermal coupler. Felt good finally getting paid for his time.
Another day came, and she called him yet again, complaining that the flame had gone out. As always, he went over to work his magic. But this particular task kept him going back to fix the same thing repeatedly.
By the fourth time that same week, OP declined coming over, stating that he was occupied with other tasks. That’s when she sent a long message accusing him of conning her and wasting her money.
OP offered to refund the $60, but he also told her not to ask him for help anymore. She fired back by calling him disrespectful and taking a shot at his parenting.

OP didn’t blow up over one water heater; he hit his limit after years of being treated like an on-call service. The overwhelming majority of the Reddit community agreed that he had already gone above and beyond for her.
In addition, a couple of readers advised him to refund the money to get her out of his hair for good. No one ever expects that lending a helping hand would snowball into such a situation, but it's never too late to set boundaries.
