Neighbor Neglected My Dog: Am I Wrong to Refuse Split Pet Care Costs?
"Is it fair to refuse splitting pet care costs with a neighbor who neglected your dog's well-being? Reddit weighs in on this contentious issue."
Some people don’t recognize a favor, and this neighbor is proving it the hard way. A Reddit dog mom, 30-year-old Max’s human, trusted her neighbor Karen with weekend pet sitting, expecting the usual tradeoff of help between two dog owners.
But when she got back, Max was a mess, skin rash blazing, clearly stressed, and even gained a few pounds. Karen admitted she forgot Max’s special diet food, skipped the daily walks, and let her terrier Bella bully him, then tried to play it off as a simple oversight when OP confronted her.
Now OP is refusing to split any future pet care costs, and Karen is calling her selfish for it.

So I'm (30F) a proud dog mom to my adorable Goldendoodle, Max. He's my world, and I spare no expense in giving him the best care possible.
This includes regular vet visits, premium food, and grooming appointments. Now, here's where the issue arises - my neighbor, let's call her Karen (45F), also has a dog, a feisty little Terrier named Bella.
We occasionally help each other out with pet sitting when either of us is busy. However, during a recent weekend when I was away, Karen was supposed to take care of Max and Bella.
Upon returning, I noticed that Max had developed a skin rash, was clearly stressed out, and had gained a few pounds. Karen confessed that she had forgotten to feed him his special diet food, hadn't taken him for his daily walks, and had even let Bella bully him, resulting in his distress.
Understandably, I was furious. I had trusted her to care for Max like her own dog, but she had neglected her responsibilities.
When I raised this with her, I was met with excuses and deflection. She claimed it was a simple oversight and that I was overreacting.
In the aftermath of this incident, I've decided not to split any future pet care expenses with Karen. I feel that if she can't fulfill her duties as a responsible pet owner, why should I have to foot the bill for shared pet care costs?
Karen, on the other hand, is now demanding that I contribute equally, arguing that it was just one mistake and that I'm being unreasonable and selfish. So, Reddit, in this situation where Karen neglected her responsibilities in caring for my dog, WIBTA for refusing to split pet care expenses with her?

This is similar to the AITA story where a friend wanted to adopt the puppy the woman had been caring for.

Karen’s “oops” turned into a full-on Max glow-down, and OP is not letting that slide.
When OP asked for accountability, Karen hit her with excuses and deflection instead of owning the damage.
Max’s rash, stress, and missed walks are the receipts here, and OP is done paying for Karen’s lapses.
Karen is demanding equal cost-sharing anyway, even after Bella bullied Max and the special diet got ignored.
