Should I Let My Friend Adopt the Puppy Ive Been Caring For?

AITA for hesitating to let my friend adopt the puppy I've been caring for, prioritizing the pup's well-being over her feelings?

A 29-year-old animal lover thought she was doing the kindest thing possible by fostering a stray puppy for a few weeks. Instead, she ended up with the kind of emotional mess that only happens when love, attachment, and bad timing collide.

Her friend, Lily, fell for the puppy instantly after seeing him and asked to adopt him, even though Lily is known for being impulsive and sometimes struggling with commitment. The original poster hesitated, not because she doesn’t care about Lily, but because she’s worried about the puppy’s well-being if Lily changes her mind. Lily did not take that pause well, accusing her of being selfish and now giving her the silent treatment.

Now the puppy is caught in the middle, and the OP is stuck wondering if protecting a bond makes her the villain.

Original Post

So I'm (29F) a huge animal lover and have been fostering a stray puppy for the past few weeks. He's a sweet little thing and has become like family to me.

My friend, let's call her Lily, recently saw the puppy and fell in love with him instantly. She's been going through a tough time and thinks having the puppy would really lift her spirits.

Quick context - Lily is known for being impulsive and sometimes struggles with commitment. I've been considering adopting the puppy myself because of how attached we've become.

When Lily asked me if she could adopt him, I hesitated and told her I needed more time to think about it. She got upset and accused me of being selfish and not caring about her feelings.

I totally get where she's coming from, but I can't help but feel protective over the puppy and worried about his well-being if Lily changes her mind or can't provide the care he needs. Lily's been giving me the silent treatment since then.

I honestly don't know if I'm wrong here. So AITA?

It’s a lot like a mom stopping her daughter from adopting a shelter puppy she already bonded with.

Lily watched the puppy for a second and suddenly decided he was her emotional support plan, and the OP’s “let me think” comment hit like a rejection.

After the OP hesitated, Lily accused her of being selfish, and the silent treatment started right after the adoption question got awkward.

The OP is torn between letting Lily take the puppy and knowing how quickly Lily can swing from “I want him now” to “I can’t commit.”

Meanwhile the puppy is still thriving with the OP, making it even harder to ignore the fear that Lily might back out once the excitement fades.

How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.

The OP isn’t just deciding a home for a puppy, she’s deciding who gets to keep the bond she already built.
