Redditor's Unexpected Proposal During Christmas Dinner Has Reddit Divided
It's the most wonderful time of the year to have family drama.
Proposals and Christmases are both magical in their respective ways. They are both prepared for and celebrated.
So what happens when you combine them? Well, you'll either get a really great story or a disastrous memory.
A Redditor posted in the subreddit 'Am I The Asshole' to gather opinions from other Redditors about certain chaos that happened during Christmas. Basically, she's confused about whether she is really in the wrong, as she is portrayed to be.
Here's the rundown. OP and her fiancé had discussions about getting engaged.
Christmas was coming up, and it was always a big deal with her fiancé's family, especially his mom. The winter wonderland and dinner were all laid out; everything was extravagant.
OP thought it was the best time to finally propose, and during dinner, as she got down on one knee, she popped the question. Her fiancé, Jake, was happy that she took the initiative to propose, and he then answered yes.
OP and her now fiancé are ecstatic, although they didn't think that there was already drama brewing. OP did expect that there might be issues since she was a woman proposing to her boyfriend and his dad is traditionally set in his ways.
But it wasn't what made their Christmas a disaster, though. It was something that got Redditors divided in the comments.
Here's OP's question

OP thought the mom was on her side since she shushed her husband, who was visibly uncomfortable the whole night. She wasn't.
They found out afterward that the mom stayed cordial but was actually furious at OP. She felt that OP sort of stole her thunder as the host of the Christmas dinner.
She also felt that OP used her hard work in making the venue pretty by proposing during dinner. OP described her as a bit of an attention seeker and noted that she had a history of problems with her.

More Redditors leaned towards OP being the a**hole, and here's what they've got to say

An unspoken rule should be followed (cont.)

They thought that OP had more intentions than just proposing

To call the mom an attention seeker feels like the pot calling the kettle black

What was supposed to be a winter-themed proposal became a snowy disaster
ninjette847
Let's say the mom is an attention seeker; it was her event and not OP's

If OP had the discussion about getting engaged, there wasn't any harm in considering what this comment entails
strawberrywine21
OP could've done it then while still having the family witness if she really wanted that and have full bellies while they did it

This is why most opinions on this thread make OP's intentions seem questionable

If OP is really reaching for that dreamy Christmas proposal, this could've been a good option too
radelaidegrl
There was a debate about the unspoken social rules, and they deemed OP as not the a**hole

There's a chance that the issue here touches on double standards

At this point, there should be a new discussion about who's more salty

In the end, OP was dubbed the a**hole in this thread. Redditors were going back and forth about whether it was the right time and place to propose.
Her intentions were questioned by most, wondering if she only had plans for a proposal or if it was to put on a show. Either way, many, even those who disagreed that she's TA, agreed that she could've at least informed the mom, as she was the host.
What do you think about OP's Christmastastic proposal? NTA or TA? We'd like to hear your thoughts in the comments.
