Roommate Wants Me to Pay More Rent for Their Cats Palace: A Fair Request or Unjust Demand?
Roommate wants extra rent for cat palace - AITA for refusing? Split opinions on fairness of sharing living space costs with feline amenities.
A roommate asked to change the rent split, and it did not go the way you’d expect. One minute, everything was calm between a 28M and their roommate, Alex (26NB), in a two-bedroom apartment where rent was evenly split. The next minute, Alex adopted a cat named Mr. Whiskers, and suddenly the spare room turned into a full-on cat playground.
Alex built climbing structures, toys, and a mini jungle gym, basically transforming the “spare room” into a dedicated feline zone. Their pitch is simple but bold: switch to a 60/40 rent split, with the OP paying more to cover the “cat space.” OP says they didn’t sign up to live in a cat sanctuary, and the compromise of splitting litter and food was not enough for Alex.
Now the question is whether OP is being unreasonable, or if Alex is trying to turn a pet into a rent upgrade.

So I (28M) have been living with my roommate, Alex (26NB), for about a year now. We split rent evenly for our two-bedroom apartment.
Everything was going smoothly until Alex decided to adopt a cat. Now, I have nothing against pets, but this cat, Mr.
Whiskers, has taken over our living space. Alex has turned our spare room into a cat paradise with all sorts of climbing structures, toys, and a mini jungle gym.
The problem is, to accommodate all this, Alex wants to split the rent 60/40, with me paying the larger share to cover the 'cat space'. I feel this is unreasonable.
I didn't agree to live in a cat sanctuary, and I don't think it's fair for me to foot the bill for a space that I can't even use. Alex argues that since it's their cat, I should contribute more towards the rent.
I've tried to compromise, suggesting we split any additional pet-related expenses like litter and food, but Alex insists on the rent increase. Am I being unreasonable here?

And if Mr. Whiskers is turning your place into a cat jungle gym, this is similar to a roommate whose cat destroyed furniture, leading to a fight over claw trimming.

The peace lasted about a year, until Mr. Whiskers moved in and Alex started building a whole cat theme park in the spare room.
When Alex proposed the 60/40 rent split, OP pushed back fast, saying they cannot use a space they did not ask to become a feline gym.
OP tried to compromise with litter and food costs, but Alex refused to budge and kept insisting the rent increase is fair because it is their cat.
With the apartment still the same size but the “cat space” bigger every day, OP is left wondering if they are the problem for not paying extra.

If OP is paying for a room they cannot even use, this cat palace might be the reason they need a new apartment.
Alex wants a 60/40 split for Mr. Whiskers, but see how a roommate reacted to rent renegotiation in this AITA about negotiating lower rent for a larger room.
