Young Girl Schools The Teacher When Answering Sexist Homework Question
You're never too young to call out sexism.
A school worksheet turned into an unexpected lesson in sexism, and one young girl answered it better than anyone expected. The problem was supposed to be a simple spelling exercise, but the wording leaned on an outdated idea about what women do for work.
Instead of writing the answer the teacher seemed to want, the girl wrote the job her parents actually have: surgeon. That small moment sparked a bigger reaction online, especially because the worksheet itself looked like it had been stuck in the past for years.
And once people saw the red-pen correction, the whole thing got even more pointed.
Her father tweeted out a picture of the homework.
The question asks for a word with "ur" in the middle that means "hospital lady."
The girl answered: "surgeon," which is the occupation of both her mother and her father.
The teacher chose to write "or nurse" in red pen next to her answer.
This dinner turned into a gender debate when a stranger accused him of misogyny after he offered his wife the option to quit her job: He Offered His Wife The Option To Quit Her Job.
Naturally, Twitter responded.
One eagle-eyed user pointed out that the worksheet was created twenty years earlier! Time for an update?
Others took the time to praise the girl for her (perhaps inadvertent) ingenuity.
Let's stop limiting what girls believe they can achieve and start helping them make their way to the top!
