Should I Skip My Best Friends Wedding for Not Being Chosen as Maid of Honor?
AITA for boycotting my BFF's wedding after she picked someone else as maid of honor? Emotions run high as Redditors weigh in on this friendship dilemma.
A 29-year-old woman refused to pretend she was fine after her best friend, Jane, picked her sister over her for maid of honor. It sounds small on paper, but in this friendship, that title was basically a lifelong promise, right up there with all the late-night drives and post-breakup comfort calls.
Jane and the OP have been best friends since high school, the kind of bond where you assume you are each other’s “right-hand woman” on the biggest day. When Jane got engaged, the OP says she was beyond thrilled, because she genuinely believed she’d be chosen. Then the wedding announcement dropped, and it was her sister, not her, who got the role.
Now the OP is stuck deciding whether to show up at all, and their mutual friends are split between “petty” and “you have every right to be hurt.”

So I'm (29F) and have been best friends with Jane (28F) since high school. We've been through everything together - breakups, makeups, and late-night drives.
When Jane got engaged, I was beyond thrilled for her. I naturally assumed I'd be her maid of honor.
For background, Jane knows how much this role means to me as I've always dreamed of being her right-hand woman on her big day. Imagine my shock when she chose her sister instead.
I was hurt and disappointed, to say the least. I know it's her wedding, her choice, but it felt like a big slap in the face.
I couldn't bring myself to attend her wedding, feeling sidelined and unappreciated despite years of friendship and support. Now, our mutual friends are split - some think I'm being petty, while others understand my feelings.
So AITA?

Also messy, it echoes the AITA where she considered skipping the wedding because her best friend married her ex.

When Jane asked her sister to stand beside her instead, the OP’s entire “maid of honor” fantasy plan collapsed overnight, and it wasn’t just about a dress.
The hurt gets real when you remember the OP has been there for Jane through breakups, makeups, and those late-night drives, so being sidelined feels personal.
That’s where the mutual friends start weighing in, with some calling OP petty for not attending, while others understand why she felt unappreciated.
And since the OP couldn’t stomach celebrating a day that didn’t include her, the question becomes whether skipping the wedding is the “wrong move” or the only move that makes sense.

If Jane’s sister gets the spotlight, the OP may finally realize she deserves a friendship that chooses her back.
