Family Demands 23-Year-Old College Student Sacrifice Her Savings To Fund Older Sister's Wedding
A college kid's life savings is set to became part of her sister's wedding budget.
In Toronto, where average rent often pushes past $,2500 a month, money conversations already carry weight before weddings even enter the picture. For one 23-year-old woman (OP), that pressure landed unexpectedly during a small family meeting that changed how she looked at her sister’s upcoming wedding.
She’s the youngest of three sisters and currently back in school, working a minimum wage part-time job while paying about $1,000 a month in rent to her mom. She’s also trying to save for her own future, with plans to move out and buy a car with her partner of four years.
It hasn’t been easy, but she’s been careful, saving steadily and holding onto the little financial stability she’s built.
Her oldest sister, Veronica, recently got engaged and is planning a wedding in a few months. On paper, things look comfortable. Veronica works as a medical secretary, while her fiancé runs a startup, not to mention their downtown apartment that costs nearly $4,000 a month.
However, with the wedding approaching, they've had to start saving aggressively and even cut down on a lot of expenditures. In addition, Veronica plans to borrow their mom’s car to do food deliveries in winter to make extra cash.
But at some point, the couple realized that all this may still not be enough to fund their dream wedding. Consequently, through their mother, Veronica requested OP and their other sister to contribute $2,000 each towards the wedding.
The twist is that while the money is technically available, it would come directly from OP's savings, which she has been amassing over the years. Worst of all, there is no expectation of repayment.
To soften the blow, their mom shared that she herself had been asked to contribute $10,000 from her retirement savings.

Money has a way of complicating even the closest family bonds, especially when major life events enter the mix.
The Reddit community has advised OP not to make such a contribution, as Veronica and her fiancé should budget within their means.
One particular Redditor stated that even if Veronica wants to ask for financial support, it should be from those who have more money than her, not less.
