Teen Refuses To Take A DNA Test Because He Is Afraid His Father Won’t Pay For His College
Poor kid. This is none of his fault.
Divorces are never pretty, and children suffer the most. Divorces involving adultery are even worse, especially when they raise suspicions about paternity.
Our OP found himself, through no fault of his own, in the middle of a nasty divorce and a conflict between his parents. As always, it's the children who suffer the most.
His father wants OP to take a paternity test. Can you imagine that?
What's disturbing is that OP refers to his legal guardian as "Dad" the entire time. This person wants him to take a DNA test to prove their genetic relationship, yet he is still the "dad" to this child.
And it's downright heartbreaking. It doesn't matter who provided the genetic material.
The ones who raise a child are its parents. And that's it.
How can they do this? This child's world is shattered.
He has been calling this person "Dad" for 18 years, and then suddenly, it's as if those 18 years didn't exist, and it was all a lie. No matter how angry the father was, he shouldn't have involved his children.
His issue is with his ex-wife, not with his kids. Let's take a look at this story, but we must warn you, it is quite sad...
OP asks:
RedditOP’s dad found out his mom was cheating on him around the time she got pregnant.
RedditAnd he asked his kids to take a DNA test. Some of the kids did.

But OP is afraid because he doesn't look like his father...

He is starting school soon and is afraid his parents won’t pay for it.

OP is living with his mom but doesn't talk to her because he is angry.

This story is heartbreaking. We can understand that the father is hurt and angry, but why is it his child's fault? He isn't responsible for his origin; he didn't choose to be born. He didn't choose his parents either.
Redditors are unanimous.
Reddit
The parents are the A-holes here.
Reddit
It is a no-win situation.

This is on everyone's mind: Hugs. It's all we can do.

This would be a proper name for the sub...

You can't abandon your kid like that.

OP's mom cheated, and that's bad. But what the father is doing is even worse...
Reddit
How? That's what everyone is wondering.

People don't have an answer.

OP is terrified.
Reddit
This is, sadly, true.
Reddit
Don't 18 years mean something?

The bottom line is:
Reddit
DNA is just DNA. Caring is what makes a parent.

Unfortunately, we didn’t receive an update on the whole situation because OP deleted the account. We hope everything works out.
But can it? Even if the test proves that man is OP’s father, the damage is already done.
They can’t ever go back to the way they were before. The relationship is ruined for good. And for what?
For a piece of paper that proves what? What is the "father" trying to achieve here?
Ruin this kid's life?
