AITA for Refusing In-Laws Dog Indoors After Chaos?

AITA for refusing to let my in-laws' unruly dog inside, leading to tension and conflict during their visit?

A 31-year-old woman refused to let her in-laws’ dog, Coco, into her house after a week of nonstop chaos, and now she’s wondering if she went too far.

Her in-laws stayed with her and her husband for a week, bringing Coco along. The dog is excitable and, in new places, tends to have accidents indoors. Despite the warning, Coco knocked over a lamp, chewed up a rug, and even peed on the couch. After multiple cleanups, OP set up a cozy outdoor area with food, water, and shelter and banned Coco from coming inside.

Now the in-laws are calling her unreasonable, and her husband says she could have handled it better, so here’s where it all went sideways.

So I'm (31F) and my husband (33M) have been married for three years. We recently had my in-laws stay with us for a week.

Now, they brought along their dog, Coco, a rather excitable and poorly behaved pup. For context, Coco tends to have accidents indoors when overly excited, especially in a new environment.

My in-laws are aware of this but claim she's well-behaved. During their stay, Coco knocked over a lamp, chewed up a rug, and even peed on our couch.

After numerous incidents and cleanup, I made the decision to ban Coco from coming inside the house. I set up a cozy outdoor area for her with food, water, and shelter.

My in-laws were not happy about this but complied. They tried to sneak her inside a few times, resulting in more chaos.

Despite the drama, I stood my ground, insisting Coco stay outside. My in-laws left earlier than planned, upset with me for not accommodating their dog properly.

They felt I was being unreasonable and uncaring. Now, my husband is caught in the middle, saying I should have been more understanding.

He understands my frustrations but thinks I could have handled it better. I feel conflicted - I didn't want to risk more damage inside, but I also don't want tensions with my in-laws.

So AITA?

This echoes the debt fight where OP didn’t invite their friend on vacation, then went into early debt collection.

The second Coco knocked over that lamp, it stopped being “just a dog,” and started being a daily cleanup mission for OP.

When the rug got chewed and the couch got peed on, OP’s outdoor setup went from “reasonable plan” to “only option.”

That’s when OP’s in-laws tried sneaking Coco inside, and the chaos basically proved OP right.

Now that the in-laws left early, OP’s husband is stuck in the middle, trying to decide whether Coco deserves indoor access or not.

How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.

If Coco can’t follow house rules, OP might be right to keep her outside, even if it costs her peace with the in-laws.
