Confronting Mom About Donut Trip Behavior: AITA?

AITA for addressing my mom's embarrassing outburst at a bakery during our donut tradition, leading to tension between us?

A 28-year-old woman tried to keep a sweet little mom tradition alive, donuts after grocery shopping, and somehow it turned into a public blow-up at a bakery counter. The worst part? It was supposed to be a fun change, trying a new place, not a moment that left her feeling embarrassed and tense in the car afterward.

Here’s the setup: they wait 25 minutes because of a mix-up with their order, and when the donuts finally show up, her mom snaps at the cashier, calls them out like they “forgot” them, and demands a discount. OP is stuck standing there while everyone watches, then she has the audacity to speak up later when things cool down.

Now OP is asking if she crossed a line by confronting her mom, just as the donut tradition starts cracking for good.

I (28F) have a tradition with my mom where we always grab donuts after grocery shopping. It's a little thing that brings us joy.

Recently, we decided to try a new bakery, but we ended up waiting for 25 minutes due to a mix-up with our order. When we finally got our donuts, my mom snapped at the cashier for 'forgetting us' and demanded a discount, embarrassing me in front of everyone.

Later, in the car, I couldn't hold it in and told her that her behavior was uncalled for, and she shouldn't have lashed out like that. I explained how it made me feel uncomfortable and disappointed.

My mom got defensive, saying she was just standing up for us and that I was overreacting. It's been tense between us since then.

My mom doesn't see anything wrong with what she did, while I feel like she crossed a line. She's now upset with me for 'calling her out' in public.

So, Reddit, with our little tradition at stake, AITA for confronting my mom about her behavior?

It’s hard not to think of the teen who refused to give her mom £1,000 after the Brazil trip hit a credit card.

The whole vibe collapses the second the cashier gets blamed for the 25-minute delay, and OP has to take the hit for standing there with her mom.

That “we’re just standing up for us” speech lands right after OP gets humiliated in front of strangers, not in a calm, private moment.

In the car, OP finally says something, telling her mom her outburst was uncalled for, and that is when the tension stops being about donuts and starts being about respect.

Now it’s reversed, her mom is upset that OP “called her out,” and the next donut run might be the moment the tradition dies.

This family drama encapsulates the intricate dynamics that often play out in mother-daughter relationships. The daughter, feeling humiliated by her mother's public outburst during what was meant to be a sweet bonding experience, clearly prioritizes social norms and the family's image. In contrast, the mother’s reaction reveals a deeper layer of frustration and a protective instinct that may have boiled over in the heat of the moment.

This clash of motivations creates a rift in what should be a cherished tradition. The daughter seeks connection through understanding and a desire for a harmonious family image, while the mother, perhaps feeling cornered or misunderstood, resorts to confrontation. Such misalignment can complicate their relationship and threaten the very essence of their shared moments.

If the donut tradition depends on public tantrums, OP is probably not the only one who should be worried.
