Roommate Dilemma: AITA for Enforcing Strict Cleanliness Rules?

AITA for enforcing strict cleanliness rules on roommates who agreed to them beforehand, leading to tension and disputes over differing standards of tidiness in our shared living space?

A 28-year-old woman refused to let two new roommates treat her apartment like a storage unit for chaos. It sounded reasonable at first, too, because Sarah and Alex seemed to agree to her rules when they moved in.

But within a week, the cracks showed fast: shoes piled up everywhere, dishes stacked in the sink, and the living room turning into a daily mess. OP tried reminders, stayed polite, and kept hoping it would click. Then last night happened. After a long day at work, she walked into a kitchen that looked like nobody had touched a sponge in weeks, and she snapped.

Now Sarah and Alex barely speak, and OP is wondering if enforcing strict cleanliness rules made her the villain.

Original Post

So I'm (28F) a meticulous and organized person by nature. Recently, two friends of a friend, Sarah and Alex, moved in with me. They seemed fine with it.

For background, Sarah and Alex are more laid-back and not as tidy. Within the first week, I noticed they weren't following my rules.

Shoes were all over the place, dishes piled up in the sink, and the living room was a mess. I reminded them politely, but things didn't change.

Last night, I came home to a messy kitchen after a long day at work. I lost it and confronted them about disregarding my rules.

I told them they needed to shape up or move out.

I stood my ground, saying they agreed to my rules before moving in. Now tensions are high, with Sarah and Alex barely speaking to me.

I understand I can be particular, but this is my home. So AITA?

It’s a lot like the AITA post where someone enforced strict rules on visiting in-laws.

Sarah and Alex seemed fine with the deal at move-in, but the shoes-on-the-floor routine started immediately.

After OP kept reminding them about the sink full of dishes and the messy living room, she finally came home to the breaking point.

The moment OP confronted them over the messy kitchen, she went from “polite reminders” to “shape up or move out.”

Now that Sarah and Alex are barely talking, OP has to live with the fallout of drawing a hard line in her own home.

How would you handle this situation? Let us know in the comments.

If Sarah and Alex can’t follow the rules they agreed to, OP might be the one who needs a new roommate situation.
