Roommate Lost Job, I Covered Rent - AITA for Asking Reimbursement?

AITA for covering my roommate's rent post-job loss & asking for reimbursement? Tensions rise as financial strain tests our living arrangement.

A 28-year-old woman refused to keep paying her roommate’s share of the rent, and now the apartment feels like a battlefield. It started as a kind gesture, her covering the 26-year-old guy’s portion after he got laid off, even though she was already taking on the full weight of a regular paycheck.

But three months turned into more, and the “I’m trying” turned into silence about money while he quietly mentioned buying a new gaming console. OP says she’s been stuck covering his rent and bills, and when she finally asked for reimbursement or even a small contribution, he flipped it on her, calling her insensitive to his job loss.

Now she’s stuck wondering if she crossed a line, or if he’s using sympathy as a rent payment plan, here's the full story.

So, I'm (28F) sharing an apartment with my roommate (26M) for the past year. We split the rent and bills equally.

Recently, he lost his job unexpectedly due to company downsizing. I sympathized with him and offered to cover his share of the rent for a month until he gets back on his feet.

Fast forward to three months later, and he hasn't found a new job. I've been covering his portion of the rent and bills during this time, feeling the financial strain.

I work full-time but it's still a significant burden. I gently brought up the topic of him reimbursing me for the rent I've covered.

He seemed defensive and said he's trying his best to find a job but hasn't had any luck yet. I understand his situation, but I also can't continue bearing the full financial responsibility of our shared space.

Amidst our conversation, he mentioned buying a new gaming console, which rubbed me the wrong way considering he owes me a significant amount in rent. I asked if he could contribute something towards the rent, even a small portion, to help me out.

He got upset and accused me of being insensitive to his job loss and financial struggles. Now, our living situation is tense, and I'm feeling conflicted.

So, AITA?

It’s also like when a woman lent money to a friend in need, then felt betrayed.

OP was being generous the first month, but once those layoffs kept dragging on, her kindness started stacking up as real unpaid bills from her roommate’s side.

The moment he talked about a new gaming console while still owing rent, the whole “I’m down on my luck” story stopped feeling so simple to OP.

When OP asked him to reimburse her or at least cover part of the rent, he got defensive and accused her of not caring about his job loss.

Now with the apartment tense and the rent still not getting paid, OP is stuck between being understanding and demanding the basic split they agreed on.
