Now she has to decide whether to stick to the road trip plan or ditch it last minute to surprise everyone with luxury, without accidentally looking selfish.

Original Post

I (28F) come from a tight-knit family. We've been planning a family road trip for months, all excited to bond and create memories.

But recently, I stumbled upon an incredible deal for a luxury vacation package that includes everything we love, like spa treatments, fine dining, and adventure activities. For background, my family works hard and rarely treats themselves to such luxuries.

The road trip was meant to be a budget-friendly getaway. But this opportunity is too good to pass up, and I know it's something they'd absolutely adore.

Now, I'm torn. Do I stick to the original plan, knowing they'll enjoy it but miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime luxury experience?

Or do I surprise them with this amazing trip, scrapping our road trip plans altogether? I can afford the luxury package without straining myself financially.

Still, I don't want to come off as selfish or high-handed for changing our plans last minute. So, Reddit, WIBTA for ditching our family road trip to surprise them with a luxury vacation package instead?

Really need outside perspective.

This also echoes the AITA case where you refused to split costs after friends picked a luxury trip, expecting you to pay anyway.

OP’s “once-in-a-lifetime” luxury find hits right when the road trip is supposed to be the budget-friendly bonding trip everyone planned for months.

The complication is that OP can afford the luxury package, but she’d still be changing the original plan her family was counting on.

The real tension is her fear of coming off high-handed, especially since she’s basically replacing the road trip with something her family rarely gets.

By the time she asks Reddit if she would be the asshole for scrapping the road trip, the question is whether surprise equals thoughtfulness or just last-minute chaos.

What would you do in this situation? Share your opinion in the comments.

Either way, this family road trip is about to become a very different kind of memory.

Before you decide, see if it’s WIBTA to push friends toward budget backpacking, not luxury resorts.
